I just saw this article in my Google Alerts. It's actually a review of a new book, "Big Sid’s Vincati: The Story of a Father, a Son, and the Motorcycle of a Lifetime," by Matthew Biberman. The article is on the Opinion page of the New York Times and written by Stanley Fish. It's thought provoking and even involves motorcycles. If you ever read Pirsig's, "Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance," you'll be even more interested in the article. If you never heard of Pirsig, read the article and then go get a copy. It's easy reading but deeply involved in philosophy too.

Here's an excerpt from the article, "Fathers, Sons and Motorcycles":

"What is it about motorcycles? I have never been on one for the same reason that I don’t go on roller coasters or other amusement-park rides. I’m terrified. Yet every so often motorcycles come into my life. When I met my wife in the middle ’70s her primary mode of transportation was a motorcycle (a small Honda). She specialized in terrifying situations. She rode it to and from work in South Philadelphia and was once robbed at an intersection while waiting for the light to turn green. She took the bike onto the Baltimore Beltway, where I felt nervous driving a car. She says now that she got it because something was missing from her life. Supershow Snags Honda Canada

On the heels of a recent announcement that Canadian Kawasaki Motors will be participating in only one Toronto-based motorcycle show this winter, the North American International Supershow reports that Honda Canada will also be returning to the popular consumer show held at the Toronto International Centre in Mississauga from January 6-8, 2012.

In a recent press release from the North American International Motorcycle Supershow, the organization notes that Honda Canada is finalizing arrangements to once again exhibit at the show. According to the press release, the Honda Corporate Booth will be located in Hall 3 and will feature the Honda motorcycle and ATV 2012 line-ups, including the best selling CBR250R, plus their extensive line of Honda Power Equipment.

According to Nick Pollice, of Honda Canada, "The Honda Canada booth will be the booth to visit this year at the North American International Motorcycle Supershow 2012. We look forward to seeing you there!"

The recent move calls into question the future of the upcoming Toronto Motorcycle Show being held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from December 9-11, 2011. With the December show traditionally the venue for manufacturers to launch their latest product to the Canadian market, the question remains whether other manufacturers will also see the North American International Motorcycle Supershow as the premiere venue to launch new product offerings. In today's economy, consolidating a number of trade shows in one market certainly makes fiscal sense.

Australasian Safari Day 3 Results 2011

The 2011 Australasian Safari competition marched on during Monday with riders covering 326km of competitive stages. After three days of racing Todd Smith remains in the lead by more than 10 minutes ahead of his brother, Jacob Smith. Todd Smith recorded the fastest time during the third leg by nearly five minutes ahead of Shane Diener. Rod Faggotter, Jacob Smith and Damien Grabham rounded out the frontrunners during the day as Frenchman Cyril Despres dropped more than 40 minutes behind the leader.
“It was fun today,” said Despres. “I was a bit faster, although I was expecting it to be like yesterday. There was some sliding – it was quite fun. Some parts were really fast. I’m still having difficulty with the course notes, it is very different to what I am used to and I’m not sure I can learn it in a week. I saw some big animals today including 1.5 meter lizard!”
Brothers Todd and Jacob Smith are helping each other along the way.
“Jacob caught me and we raced each other most of the way, and we also worked together to open and close gates,” said Todd. “The stages were flowing nicely - it was fun.”
Damien Grabham, who broke his leg in the competition two years ago, said it was a relief just to finish the day. Damien is currently fifth in the overall timesheet after winning the first stage during Day 3, and is five minutes ahead of Despres in the overall charts.
“Today was mentally challenging,” Damien said. “I just cruised and took it easy. It was good.”
Meanwhile Ben Grabham suffered mechanical difficulties in between stages and was unable to compete in the second half.
Tomorrow the course will stay around Laverton with a looped course that begins and ends in the gold mining town. It features a massive 660km circuit spread out over three separate stages.

Indonesia Will Get 7 New Products from Honda in 2012

Indonesia world’s third largest two wheeler market will get 7 new product launches by Honda’s Indonesian subsidiary, Astra Honda Motors (AHM). According to sources the company is planning to launch 7 new products which will be targeted to fulfill requirement of Indonesian consumers. These new products include new variants and new products in both motorcycle and scooter segment. The major focus will be on sports segment where a new sport motorcycle will give accompany to Honda CBR150R and Honda CBR250R.

The new product launches are part of Honda’s strategies for Indonesia. AHM is aiming to sales 4.8 million units in Indonesia. The company is also planning to Incorporates fuel injection (PGM-FI) technology in all the models in Indonesia by the end of 2013. As far as the sales target of 4.8 million units concerns, AHM will invest Rp104 billion (Rs. 600 million) which will increase monthly production capacity of scooters to 200,000 units by March 2012. AHM is also reviewing to add more capacity, in response to strong demand for its scooters, and in the anticipation of strong demand for motorcycle in the year 2013. Honda has sold 4.3 million units in Indonesian domestic market with the market share of 52% in the year 2012. The new product launch will further consolidate Honda’s leadership in Indonesian market.

Beside this Honda is planning to incorporate fuel injection technology in all the models it sells in Indonesia. This is in response to strong competition and stringent emission norms. The major hurdle in incorporating fuel injection technology is a cost factor. In India we will have fuel injection version cost Rs. 8,000 – 10,000 more than carbureted version of motorcycle. If sources are correct, Honda is planning to launch fuel injected model at additional cost of to Rp250,000 (Rs. 1,460) for standard type of model. The first model will be Honda Vario 125cc fuel injected scooter. This will have the new 125cc global engine developed for scooter by Honda which is 25% more fuel efficient than conventional scooter engine.

"Even more alarming are reports of the NYPD conducting allegedly unconstitutional motorcycle-only checkpoints, and regularly ticketing riders based upon incorrect interpretation of motor vehicle regulations. One of the most telling cases is that of Karen Perrine, a graphic designer from Staten Island, who was ticketed in October 2005 for riding her motorcycle in the high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) lane on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Armed with the knowledge that federal law permits motorcyclists to ride in HOV lanes on federally funded roadways, Perrine decided to fight the ticket in court with the assistance of the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA)." -- Honey Berk

All It Takes is Motorcycle Maintenance

I ran across this article in the New York Times. It has to do with the two authors' attempt to find people who have uncovered simple solutions to world problems. In this article they found that medical workers could greatly extend their relief efforts by utilizing motorcycles to get to outlying areas of Africa. In addition, they found a way to keep the bikes maintained on a regular basis. Here's an excerpt from this excellent article by Tina Rosenberg and David Bornstein:

"Until 2008 Kotelo could visit only three villages a week, because he had to reach them on foot, walking for miles and miles. But in February of that year, Kotelo got a motorcycle - the best vehicle for reaching rural villages in Africa, most of which are nowhere near a real road. Just as crucial, he was given the tools to keep the bike on the road: he received a helmet and protective clothing, he was taught to ride and trained to start each day with a quick check of the bike. His motorcycle is also tuned up monthly by a technician who comes to him. Now, instead of spending his days walking to his job, he can do his job. Instead of visiting three villages each week, he visits 20. As such, demand has surged for more forgiving, versatile mounts – bikes which deliver a satisfying sportbike experience without tortured ergonomics.

Enter the growing Road Sport class. These bikes don’t hew to strict displacement limits imposed by racing regulations, and they don’t get churned out of factories with cookie cutter-like similarity. Call them road sports, or gentlemen sportbikes, or sport standards… Call them whatever you want, but the expanding options of these street-friendly rides are a key trend of motorcycling these past few years.
Driving demand is another critical industry trend, America’s aging riding population. Recent decades have seen the average motorcycle purchaser’s age climb from the mid 30s to now pushing 50. What was once a young man’s game has morphed into a middle-aged past-time. And it’s funny how time changes perception. Age brings aching joints and grey hair (if it stays at all), but it also brings experience and, maybe, a bit of wisdom. Dragging knees inches from the double yellow sounds fine and dandy for the young bucks, whose knees don’t creek getting out of office chairs. But there’s plenty of old stags who’d give up a couple tenths on the backroads for a riding position that doesn’t require chiropractic intervention the next morning.
While older, I mean, distinguished sportbike riders make up the key demographic for this emerging segment, so are bargain hunters. Superbike MSRP elevate along with the performance, and many of these Road Sport offerings soften the blow – shaving a couple thousand off the asking price with cost-saving components that still prove more than competent for the street.

Another attraction of the Road Sport class is versatility. As market segments get more and more specialized, a do-it-all mount becomes more alluring than ever – particularly in the dire economy. Motorcycle sales have been slashed across the board since the recession, and one big factor is the elimination of multiple bike purchases. Few people can afford the indulgence of a track bike, a touring bike, and a dual-sport… Instead they’re hunting for a jack-of-all-trades, and the Road Sport class can fit the bill. These bikes must excel in canyon carving, be capable commuters and also comfortably deliver when pressed into touring duties. And while they won’t bring home any racing cups, if required they should acquit themselves at the odd track day too.

Motorcycle USA assembles five bikes that best fit these Road Sport designations. First up are luxury mounts from BMW and Honda with the K1300S and VFR1200F. Both the Bavarian and Nipponese bikes stand out in this comparison with un-sportbike-like shaft final drives. They also feature high-end fit and finish, along with an accompanying high-end performance and MSRP.

More affordable entries from Japan make up the remaining trio. The Kawasaki Ninja 1000 is an all-new model for 2011, essentially a faired version of Kawi’s Z1000 streetfighter. Suzuki takes a similar tack with its GSX1250FA. This fully-faired version of the naked Bandit standard marks one of Suzuki’s few 2011 model year additions. Yamaha’s FZ1 arrives as the outlier in this group, having been a staple of the Tuning Fork brand’s lineup for many years now. In the past MotoUSA has tossed the FZ1 in with the naked streetfighters for comparison duty, where it half fit in with its half-fairing. We want to revisit the familiar Fazer to see if it better meshes with these Road Sport competitors.

2011 Kawasaki Versys Project Part 1

The Versys is one of Kawasaki’s great do-all bikes. We snagged a 2011 model as a last-minute fill-in for a Pacific Coast Tour from Southern California. Little did we know the 650 Twin would start to grow on us, and so it was decided to keep the Kawasaki street bike and find some products to help accentuate its capability.
Take a look at the 2011 Kawasaki Versys now that we've installed some touring and protective accessories.
As the name implies, versatility was high on the list when Kawasaki designed this motorcycle. An upright, comfortable seating position allows the rider a solid platform and excellent view of their surroundings. Immediately we decided this bike could be a useful touring mount if it had some carrying capacity. Strapping a duffel bag to the passenger seat wasn’t quite what we had in mind, so our first call went in to the Italian company, Givi. This accessory manufacturer produces luggage and protection with a 24-month warranty on all of its products.

The newest hard cases from Givi are the Trekker series. Compared to Givi’s traditional streamlined, smooth edges, the Trekker bags are much more utilitarian looking. The square cases are black plastic with an aluminum finish on top and have a rugged appearance similar to what you would find on a BMW GS or comparable adventure touring machine. The top case is available in 33-liter or 46-liter capacities, both rated to hold 22 pounds. Ours came as part of the TRKPACK3, which includes the larger top case and a pair of 33-liter side panniers for $925. We easily fit a full-face helmet and our jacket in the top case. The entire luggage is capable of holding a large laptop case and they all have internal straps to help keep items from bouncing around.

One of the best features of the Trekker bags is the mounting hardware. The racks are sturdy and the connection is simple. Givi equipped the Trekkers with its patented MONOKEY technology which allows a single key to open the case as well as remove it from the racks. Each bag comes with two keys, and all six keys are matched, which means it only takes one to access all the bags. We’ve got plenty of spares!

The Givi Trekker hard cases add some bulk to the rear of our Versys, but they are extremely useful for commuting and touring.
Using the latching mechanism is simple and secure. It only takes a single use to get the hang of it and there are no complicated or hard-to-see connecting points. The only complaint we have is that the bags are locked every time. It would be nice to have the option of leaving them unlocked. The key must be inserted every time the rider wants to open a bag; however, we’re happy with the security it provides and are willing to cope with such a small gripe.

We have not ridden the bike in rain yet, which leaves the question of waterproofing, but the Trekker bags have a recessed, waterproof foam seal which runs around the inner edge of the lid. It looks like it will be a secure seal, but we’ll have to wait for some inclement weather before knowing for certain.

After spending a couple weeks with the latest crop of mega-adventure touring bikes in the 2011 Adventure Touring Shootout, we had plenty of experience with different sets of luggage. For the most part, there were glaring errors in most of the designs. This surprised us considering that the OEMs built the cargo specifically for their own machines. So far the Givi Trekker bags are outperforming virtually all of the ones we recently sampled. Since they were all factory accessories and cost in the neighborhood of $1000, we’d rather equip all of the bikes, except for the KTM, with the Givi Trekker bags.

9-11 Stories - NYPD First Responder on a Motorcycle

I remember September 11, 2001. On the eve of the 10th anniversary of this tragic event, I encountered a report from Cape-Coral-Daily-Breeze.com by Meghan McCoy that lists many first-person stories from that day. One involved a motorcycle rider who was an NYPD first responder. Here's an excerpt:

"Andujar, who lived 75 miles northwest of the city, jumped on his motorcycle and traveled more than 100 miles per hour into the city. Kawasaki Recalls 2011 ZX1000 for Wiring Harness Problem

Kawasaki is recalling certain model year 2011 Ninja ZX-10R/ZX-10R ABS (ZX1000JBF/JBFL/KBF/KBFL) motorcycles.

It is possible for a portion of the wiring harness to become pinched between the rear subframe and the rear fender or between the rear subframe and the bolt holding the seat cover. This can damage the harness and wiring and result in a short between wires and the frame or within wires, which could result in the engine stopping suddenly.

The number of units affected is 2560.

If the headlight switch is slowly moved from one position to another (high beam to low beam or low beam to high beam), both beams may be on momentarily and the BCM interprets this as an overload condition.

The ground joint connector of the wire harness could overheat and become deformed, possibly causing an intermittent ground wire connection. The electronic steering lock may fail to disengage during the motorcycle "key-on" process. This has been linked directly to a certain revision of the hands free device software. It could result in a situation where the motorcycle's engine might start while the steering lock is still engaged. A rider could start the motorcycle and attempt to ride away while the steering is still locked.

BMW Recalls 2008 R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure for Electrical System Problem

BMW has issued a recall of certain 2008 R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure motorcycles.

In certain situations, such as high generator speeds combined with large demands for electrical current, spurious signals could emerge within the motorcycle's electrical system. If this were to occur, it could affect the pressure sensor signals of the anti-lock brake system (ABS) control unit. If this happened, the ABS could switch off; However, in such a situation, a warning lamp would illuminate. Normal braking would still be available to slow and stop the motorcycle.

BMW has not announced the number of units in the recall.

Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance Run - Old Bikes Hit the Road

As I mentioned in a previous blog entry, The Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance Run has begun. This is a coast-to-coast run of pre-1916 motorcycles starting from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina and ending in Santa Monica, California. Dates for the run are September 10-26, 2010. Check out the Cannonball Run website for everything you might want to know about this historic run. (I've noticed that the website can be slow to load or even produce dreaded Internal Server Errors.)

Motorcycle Accidents - Save Yourself

I've been harping on safe riding for years. I even wrote 10 Ways To Be Safe on a Motorcycle. Please read my article and pass it on to your friends, even those who don't ride. We need to save a few lives and it all starts with you.

I see several motorcycle fatalities every day through my Google Alerts. Here's a representative article I just read. It will break your heart.

Reading a newspaper account of an accident like this always leaves the reader with questions about just what were the conditions under which the accident occurred. We've all heard reports that the driver didn't see the bike at all. Well, there are conditions where the sun is in your eyes and blocks out the rider. Or, some part of the structure of the car blocks your vision. I know this happens. I have to move forward, back, and side-to-side sometimes to be sure I can see the complete roadway when I'm waiting to turn in my car. And the small profile of a motorcycle coming at you is hard to see even under good conditions. Of course, these days, the possibility of the driver having a cell phone in their ear doesn't help at all.

I don't want to leave the motorcycle rider out here. We, as riders, don't always look out for ourselves. We know that we need to consider ourselves invisible to other drivers (and motorcyclists). That means always riding with space around us and constantly practicing defensive riding. Anticipate what a driver will do and allow space in case they do what you expect.

In the case of trying to prepare for a left-turner in front of you, always make sure you don't ride close to the car in front of you. A left-turner will see the car in front of you but you may be blocked from their view. The left-turner sees the car in front of you pass and makes a sudden left turn and you smash into them.

I heard of another accident where a car waiting to make a left turn did nothing wrong except they had their wheels turned left anticipating the turn when a vehicle behind them crashed into them and forced their car into the oncoming lane killing a motorcyclist. Folks, I thought everyone knew that you never turn your wheels at rest while waiting to turn. Always keep them straight ahead. If you're hit, you won't go into the oncoming lane.

I guess one could go on and on about left-turners and how to prevent motorcycle fatalities. However, I know these accidents will keep happening. But we all can prevent a few from happening. Reading my 10 Ways To Be Safe on a Motorcycle will help to put a few ideas in your head that may save your life. And really, all I'm trying to do is save you and keep you riding and riding and riding until the day you choose to stop riding. Hopefully, that day will never come.

Peter Lenz, Teen Motorcycle Racer, Dies at Indy

Peter Lenz, 13, was killed yesterday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway after his motorcycle crashed and he was hit by another racer. Here's an excerpt by Jonathan Welsh of the Wall Street Journal:

"The death of 13-year-old motorcycle racer Peter Lenz yesterday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway raises the question: How young is too young for kids participating in inherently dangerous motorsports? Honda is recalling certain model year 2010 Honda VT1300CR, VT1300CRA, and VT1300CT motorcycles manufactured from December 17, 2009 through May 24, 2010.

These motorcycles fail to conform to the certification requirements of Part 567. The gross axle weight rating (GAWR) is incorrect.

Ducati Recalls 2010 MTS1200 for Throttle Cable Problem

Ducati is recalling certain model year 2010 Multistrada 1200 motorcycles.

The throttle cables may come into contact with the upper edge of the radiator during normal operation of the motorcycle. This situation could cause the throttle cables to become chafed by the radiator resulting in damage to the motorcycle and a potential hazard to the rider.

BMW Recalls 2005-2007 R1200GS Adventure Motorcycles for Fuel Tank Bolt Problem

BMW is recalling certain 2005 through 2007 R1200GS Adventure motorcycles manufactured from December 7, 2005 through September 26, 2007.

The fuel tank front attachment bolts can work loose allowing the bolts to come into contact with the fork leg if the handlebar is turned a significant amount.

BMW is recalling certain model year 2007 through 2009 R1200 and K1200 series motorcycles manufactured from August 2006 through May 2009.

Due to the current routing of the front brake lines, it is possible that during riding, and therefore associated vibration, the brake lines could be under strain. If the vibration/strain is significant, the brake line could split and start to develop a leak.
